Today after 2 years and 1 month of playing I'm finally quitting the game. In that time I went from struggling through Fall 2014 just one week after starting, to getting my first hard medal a few events later, to marrying my starter, and then to finally completing the Kantaidex today. All of this I owe completely to the advice I've received here, you are all without a doubt the best guide for this game anywhere on the internet.
