You'll do fine OP, so long as you follow most of the advice in this thread.
I would really recommend playing the games though, not because its what the elitists do (although it IS what elitists do), but because they are actually really charming and lots of fun. Even if you just play little by little, as long as you don't lose heart and are having fun you'll get the hang of it eventually!
If you can stomach playing on an Emulator, the first games in the series for PC98 are actually lots of fun and are, for the most part, an excellent introduction to most Touhou mechanics.

It's a really fun game and I like a lot of the music. Eternal Shrine Maiden, Magic Mirror, Blade of Banishment, Now, Until the Moment You Die, Oriental Lesson, and Swordsman of a Distant Star are some of my favorite songs from the game

They really don't get many remixes, which is a huge shame
