How and why are there so many English words peppered throughout spoken Japanese?

I know there are loanwords in any language, but the extent that English is heard in Japanese has always intrigued me.

I can't seem to find much information on the information, even though it must be an interesting sociolinguistic story. Why have they taken to adopting English words and phrases to such a higher extent than other cultures that have endured similar amounts of American/Western influence.

I figured this would be a good place to ask for some insights.
