In English, we have "one", "first", "single", "sole", "lone", "individual" and a dozen other ways to say that there is one of something, or that it is a distinct item separate from the rest of a set. Same with "two", we have "second" and so on. Japanese does the same exact thing, it just looks weird from the outside because there's a pattern you're not seeing. Take a bird's eye view for a second, though, and some of it will start to click into place.
