I think I got it. Later on it mentions おばあさんは、雨戸を一まいせおって. Undoing the て form, I found 背負う (pic related).
Kinda weird in おじいさん's case a verb was left hanging on it's い stem like that, I'm guessing that was probably 背負い込む (to carry on one's back​), and maybe it's common to omit the 込む.

What's the issue with hukumusume? They're in general easy to read and understand, and you can download the audio file to keep listening through the day. I'm trying to go through 1 story per day.
