Completely disagree, I found Ciconia characters utterly forgettable and insultingly one-note for the most part like this little shit, serving more as exposition dumps for the sake of explaining the new setting rather than actually individual, memorable characters of their own. For most of the characters, the moment you see one of them for the first time shows everything you get to know about them for the rest of the story, and none of what you see is really interesting to begin with. But the problem is that, even the characters that it tries to give more development come to off as annoying and tacky, like Jayden. Too much of the story is focused on international politics and exposition, there's nothing that made me care for the characters' well being. The only characters whose background or future I'm interested in are Miyao, Gunhild, Koshka and Lilja, and the latter two spent pretty much the whole time pissing me off with how repetitive and annoying they were.

I agree about Higurashi chapter one lacking strong characterization, but that Kinzo comment of yours just ignores everything else in Umineko's. Umineko's strong characterization from and interesting interactions between the adults gripped me from the get go, I actually liked the first half more than the latter. Sadly, other than Battler, the kids kinda suck.
