After really liking Hyakki Ryouran no Yakata (minus one route), I tried Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shimai. Hoping for something similar, so to say. Art, music and such quickly gave a similar atmosphere and the story seemed interesting at first as well. But the game ended up being just a nukige.

Hyakki Ryouran had a pretty nice story where even most side characters had their own agendas and goals, important "connections" to other characters of the cast and so on. The protagonist got thrown into a big web of something that had be unraveled. The other game however quickly showed a much more linear stance. No overarching plot, instead you'd have a single small thing every route. The heroines remained flat and uninteresting, in part because you wouldn't really see much of them outside of h-scenes anyway.


In a way Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shimai felt like a doujin game, with how it was written. Always progressing just like the writer wants to, no time to bother with things like "does it make sense for this character". I especially loved how the protagonist was all confused and "why?" about how the heroines are fine with the weird "ceremony", and a bit later was all confused and "why?" when a girl appears that isn't fine with it. Things also get conveniently forgotten and/or ignored, as if something more was planned but scrapped. Someone died and you can't call the police? Okay. Never mentioned again.
But seeing how the last route you can play is essentially just an ero collection, it's pretty obvious what happened. They probably wanted to do something more, but ended up giving up on that idea pretty fast. A shame. And it's not like the ero was particularly noteworthy either. Hyakki Ryouran had at least a bunch of fun scenarios fitting to the yakata setting, like pic related.
