In retrospect I always think this is strange. I remember seeing lads' mags and porn mags in newsagents as a child. It was amusing but it wasn't scarring or anything.
Same with soaps. I never really cared about soaps, but I remember kids in primary school talking about how a character slept with so-and-so's wife or whatever. They understood it and for the most part talked about it just as adults would.
Though overall, sex was still taboo/funny/scary/whatever, but it's like everyone understood that it was going to become a fact of life for us in 10 years or so.

I think that, save a few uptight middle-class people, Britons generally have a good understanding of how to be frank about sex to kids, without going too far.
