They never outright say, but seem to really all be angels and related beings. Aru's ID had her race listed as a demon, and those are technically fallen angels which could justify still having a halo. They didn't explore further, but one girl from Trinity talks about the bible as says ''breach of contract is the reason we were expelled from paradise'', which is something that applies to humans, but they aren't so if she wasn't talking about humanity alone, all them may be descendants of angels and demons that got expelled.
