Not sure, but I think Japan has a very unique mind set about asshole. It isn't seen as sexually as in the West, which is also why it's not censored in porn. I personally haven't seen a gravure model that shows butthole as you've mentioned, but the more risky ones I've seen can sometimes wear thongs and show rills. 10 years ago or so, even JIs were not uncommon to show glimpses of brown occasionally.
