I think abyusers choose Yukkuri since they're the most defenseless creatures one could create, short of the Tribbles from Star Trek. And they use them to release their most debased power fantasies because, in their life, they have none.

Which is why they get so defensive when they think they're being attacked, or get so angry when authors don't show as much brutality, or none at all, in their art. Because they're once again not in a position of control. I wouldn't be surprised if they went on to abuse real pets once the fun of imagining Yu abuse wears off.
