There were ways to do it, either having a penpals thing, showing Kanako's plots, showing up as an avatar(forma hebe), a danmaku battle to establish a branch shrine like the real Hakurei shrine has, and we could've had more Oni/Okyuu/Satorin moments through her as well.
Heck even Marisa had better characterization and she only had like 2 or 3 chapters before becoming a side character for Hana and Mima
