Text hooking doesnt have to mean they MTL (literally the worst option you can choose with textooking) they could be using it to easily look up words or get the furigana by passing it through chiitrans or vnr, of course if they could read at a level where they didnt need to look up words and kanji readings so often it would be better, at least they are trying.
