Man, I still can't believe how insanely banal Sotsu's conflict setup was compared to Meguri. Both Rika and Satoko wanted the same thing, an ideal world with no tragedies. Their only difference was trivial at best. It hardly made any sense for either character, whether we're talking about >MUH LUCIA or >SATOK NO STUDY
How in the fucking fuck could R07 have written this dumb fanfic plot.

Then you have Meguri, where their goals are literally polar opposites. Satoko wants to loop 1983 forever, Rika wants to escape. This shit works. It makes for an interesting setup. It aligns with OG Higurashi instead of shitting all over it, no need to invent riduculous bullshit motive for Rika.

Satoko still had to go schizo to make the plot work and the tragedies may feel forced, but hey, at least this feels more Satoko. If I have to choose between Satoko's underlying motivation being playing a twisted game with Rika OR planning to mindbreak Rika *to assert her own will*, I'll take the first one every time. And on a tangential note, if I didn't know anything about Gou I would find it vaguely believable that Satoko would want to keep looping a happy part of her childhood instead of growing up. Not a 1983 where she has godlike powers and knowledge of nii-nii never waking up, but still.

I can't wait to see what kind of developments Tomato has in store to make the damashi arcs work with Meguri. Many of those fragments in the manga felt like Satoko was just having fun, even more so than in the anime. But they still seemed to culminate in the "mindbreak rika" thing with the meeper watanagashi. How is Tomato going to explain that? And then the last happy fragment progressing up to Satoko's birthday. Did something change between Satoko and Eua? Does Takano's redemption even play a part in Meguri? Her role was completely sideskipped in manga nekodamashi. Wait why the fuck did this post get so long.
