I'm pretty sure that her intelligence is because she is a nine tailed kitsune, though not definitively seeing as there are no other nine tailed kitsune to compare to, or any kitsune greater than one tail. Being a Shikigami might help, but it's not the sole reason. For example Chen is not very bright despite being a Shikigami. As far as intelligence goes Ran isn't anywhere near the top. There isn't anything Ran can do that Yukari can't except be in places separate from her master and get things done when she's sleeping, which is why Ran is her primary Shikigami and acts as proxy. Yukari has other Shikigami, like crows, but they're just crows and are only good for spying.
