Whenever I run into words like this with such clear etymologies in Japanese, it always makes me sad that English is such a clusterfuck of a language with so many loan words that it's impossible to tell without deliberate research why most words mean what they do.

It would be nice if some sort of linguistic purist movement caught on like they have in Iceland so we could turn English back into a true Germanic language which actually makes sense instead of the pseudo-creole that it is now.
