Nothing should stop you from soloing the game if you wish to. Don't need to have pets to complete everything in the game but they can be helpful if you properly invest in them and make them good. Ideally yeah you would want to get to act 3 and reach the cap speed Leold can get you to before consuming Hermes. However if you do manage to get to 800 speed before act 3 I wouldn't sweat it. Just use your AP on something else and start consuming Hermes. I know that's what I'm going to do.
