There are still plenty of gyaru in Japan, although their styling is a bit more toned down than the past. I don't know if you've ever watched Terrace House, but girls like Hana and Aya from the showed are self-proclaimed gyarus. The more hardcore looking ones are not as common but still exist as well. Most gyaru you see today I would consider their looks to be gyaru-lite. Plenty of gyarus also work in the sex industry. There are shops that are are solely centered around gyarus, and you can usually find at least a few that gyarus in other kinds of shops. I've used/stopped by these places, but I wasn't let in to the last one, though.
