"braced" is a bit awkward
according to japanese dictionary
>hagemasu: to encourage someone so as to bring out more energy or courage
but in english you don't really say 'encourage self' do you? so it's maybe tricky as a translation problem. maybe 'shook himself off' 'psyched himself up' etc. are more appropriate, but those are very 俗語 so they wouldn't want to put it in their dictionary perhaps. actually the more i think about it the more i'm fine with braced himself
