Maybe that's what some anons would say they believe if you asked them about their views ("it's just words dude"), but people are more intelligent than that socially.
Everyone understands that if you use the right words in the right way (especially if you direct them at someone who trusts you, is dependent on you, if it's representative of a broader group conflict or something similar), you can hurt them quite badly, and since people here aren't generally vindictive sociopaths, of course we wouldn't go out of our way to be awful to anyone even if we did think they could get away with it. I'm not speaking about the average /pol/tard or twitter user here, obviously.

That explanation is rather abstract, though, so here are a few caveats:
For one, there's the problem of what "these words" are. Different groups often have different taboo words (hinamizawa treats trap as a slur, for instance). Often where one side perceives offense, the other is just expressing a different worldview. In these cases, the way I see things, when (you) people get "offended", it's really a calculated political move - crying out in pain and pointing at the harm we are inflicting by contradicting your self-image, so that hopefully the state forces us to act like we believe what you want us to believe. But I don't have to accept that 'trans women are women' any more than I have to accept that Allah or Yahwe is real.
And then, there's also context. Any and all words, under the right circumstances, can be used in ways that are perfectly appropriate and even useful.
The second part of this post exists because I anticipate the usual "why can't you just be a decent human being and not use bad bad words at all, then" response.
