Nekomata don't follow the same "rule" as Kitsune in Japanese folklore. They don't gain an extra tail every 100 years, their two tails are formed when their original tail splits. This happens when a cat has lived long enough, whatever that is.

And since cats die relatively quickly, an "old cat" need not be all that old from our perspective.
