Short SC this time

I started noticing it about a week ago.

It was the small things, barely perceptible but still there, like the buzzing of a mosquito. At all times I could hear it: A faint voice humming, "Haaaaaaan~". One morning I found all the food in my kitchen replaced with peaches, all my plates smashed, scattered like shark’s teeth on the floor. Getting out of the shower another evening, I found the word ‘ƎNƎNMI’ spelled across my steam-covered bathroom mirror. I turned on the tap to splash cold water on my face. Instead, my sink filled with vegetable juice. I thought I’d watch my favourite American drama, iCarly, for a bit just to ground myself back in reality. However, when I turned on my T.V., a single frame remained frozen, flickering on the screen. A girl with blonde hair done up in an elaborate double-bun style with pink paper flowers, facing away from the camera.

Slowly, the camera panned in until only her head was in frame. Impaled to my seat with dread, I could only watch in terror as her head turned like a screw towards the camera. Just as I thought I caught the glint of a fanged smile in profile, the spell was broken by the ringing of my phone. Unknown caller, it said. Looking back quickly, I saw the T.V. had gone dark. Hands shaking, I picked up my phone and answered the call.

There was no voice on the other end of the line. Just some very dorky music that included, to my horror, both a cowbell AND a xylophone.

Now I was truly scared.

I had to get out. Not stopping to grab a jacket, not stopping to put on my shoes, I burst out of my front door expecting the chill of the witching hour night to buffet my body. Instead, I was not outside at all. A grand interior of corporate hell unfolded before me, inhabited by what could only be called ‘Root People’. Their skin was orange as a carrot and covered in bruises and kiss marks. They lay in slothful repose; they greedily gobbled down dog food; they lustfully shared lewd pictures of anime armpits. From sheer shock, I staggered back and bumped into something, or someone, behind me. An orange-scented breeze blew along the hackles of my neck, and on the wind like a breathy whisper I heard the words…
