Really late, but those vents on the sides are from a cooling chamber for the smokestack. When the tested aircraft landing back in the 20s they found out hot exhaust from the smokestack created ascending currents above the ship that could causes perturbations during landing. Notice how carriers built during that period had different ways to deal with that problem, like how Kaga had an horizontal smokestack that ran all the way to her stern (and made the ship itself pretty much unlivable)
