Why does Japan prefer Mario over Sonic?

Is it because Japan likes easy mode?

Mario:
- Enemies that launch projectiles come late in the game
- Bosses take very few hits to die. Usually 3.
- You are rewarded for playing well with extra lives

Sonic:
- Projectile launching enemies are in the game from the first level
- Bosses take 6-8 hits to die
- You are rewarded for playing well with bonus levels
