Hires fix is quite literally img2img. It's the same function. The difference is you get more fine-tune control with img2img, plus you don't waste time/processing power on upscaling/regenerating every single gen, most of which will likely be useless.

That said, if you prefer to fire and forget (and don't have to worry about the power bill...), it's a legitimate method too.

Nevertheless, for a newbie, it's better to play with img2img manually to get a feel for the settings and what they do. Then you can automate all you like and know with a degree of surety what's going to happen.
