Do you realize that nobody in this day and age gets a mainstream media debut and CM contracts because of one lone photo being spammed endlessly on 2ch? I'll tell you only two words: stealth marketing.
The mainstream debut was planned by Yoshimoto, which oversaw them since their first single. The idea was probably to find an excuse to introduce the only visually decent members in a grassroots kind of way, and then expand on this, but you can see that the strategy failed as attention from normies waned too fast and no core fanbase stuck around.
By the way, guess who has also a small corner on Kawaiian TV, incidentally yet another production by Yoshimoto?
