Why wouldn't we understand this, we see it happen it all the time. Its all fine for some 15 year old to pledge an allegiance to 2D for the rest of the teens because it has been plotted out that he will never be near women for the next 5-10 years, its a simple self defense mechanism. But if you are actually in touch with reality you'd look for different things in girls.
3D idols ideally should age the best into the mid 20's, especially H!P ones, they spend their time keeping their looks in prestine shape and have a clean slate of morality in most cases. When they retire its like walking out in a fairy tale world where they await hundreds of suitors to provide for them for the rest of their lives. (Now that is supposed to be a dream and not reality)
