Remember that as a JET you're not a teacher, you're an entertainer pretending to be a teacher. There's a reason people call us "dancing monkeys." If you can play guitar, sing, or somehow incorporate your English into a fun activity then you'll make your odds a lot better.
It goes without saying but you're from a native English speaking country, right? I lol every time someone with English as a second language tries to get in as an English teacher.
They'll never admit it but being white helps. It contributes to the European/American vision that Japs have of us.
Probably most importantly, you need to make the interviewers aware that you understand this is a job, not a vacation. So many people try to become JETs because they want to "travel Japan." Literally I saw someone arrive and request paid time off the first week of school. They are not paying you to live in Japan to practice your Japanese, or explore the country, or enrich yourself in the culture. They are paying you to entertain some kids while exposing them to native-level English.
DO NOT sperg out about anime or manga or any other weebshit. You can mention you watched DBZ or Pokemon as a kid but THAT'S IT. Definitely don't write some autistic shit like in that email I posted when you're asked to provide a short introduction of yourself.
Basically be outgoing, able to talk happily with strangers, able to give presentations, have a performance skill (guitar, singing), don't reveal your powerlevel, don't act desperate, remember this is a job not a vacation. If you can check all of these boxes you are ahead of 90% of all applicants.
