language is arguably the most important signifier of Japanese ethnic identity and lots of people miss this because they are from America, where race is everything, and can't conceive of a different worldview. the "uniqueness" of the Japanese language and what it means to speak it natively is one of the core tenets of Nihonjinron and a lot of other ideas in it grow from this idea that the language gives Japanese people a certain innate nature, one that foreign speakers of the language can't attain even if they speak it fluently. in this context it is less important that someone looks mixed race than if they speak Japanese natively and are able to grok Japanese social structures and mentalities. Osaka is seen by some as an interloper not really because of her DNA but because she lacks these traits. it's not an uncommon to hear of fluent expats being told by Japanese acquaintances "I forget I'm not talking to a Japanese" because of their language skill--the language is seen as synonymous with the people
