Rinnosuke's ability hints at his mother being a youkai somehow tied to knowledge/divination. My bet is that Rinnosuke's mum used to be an encyclopaedia, and his dad's thirst for knowledge went a touch too far, turning said encyclopaedia into a tsukumogami. Then the rest was history.
