Insults aside, it's entirely possible to have villains with character and motivation. It does not mean they have to be perfectly innocent and their actions doing harm unbeknownst to them. It could, instead, be that IT IS THEIR INTENTION FOR ONCE. Their character and desires are the ROOTS for their drive for inflicting the damage that the others cause by accident or by decided necessity.

It doesn't feel good to punish an innocent; and if it does, you're a sadist.
Even at that, punishing innocents ALL THE DAMN TIME gets fucking grating and being able to punish a deliberate wrongdoer feels god damned rewarding.
