They did use their power to make I forget what happen in that chapter with the story about the guy and his dog. Also fairies are useless for everything, there's nothing Marisa could use them for. They couldn't even break out of their own house when it was wrapped in vines twice. Reimu has more use for their bodies than their powers, though there's that unfinished Hirasaka doujinshi about flooded Gensokyo that Sunny was going to help Reimu on.

They understand the value of money but they don't need anything to stay alive. They just gather around interesting places.

Outside of direct mention, they seem to enjoy cosplaying since they easily become maids, put on animal ears like in IN and WBaWC, and cosplayed as zombies for Orin's sake. If you gave them clothes and alcohol they'd probably do whatever you wanted them to do.
