Satoshi was meant to be chubbier that that, kinda like Gian from Doraemon. Ryukishi himself described him as beautiful (nice) Gian (pic related), but changed his character because handful of fans expected him to be handsome.
His personality was more "cool" afterwards, and Satoshi was the dominant one in the relationship between him and Shion. I once uploaded the earlier draft of Mekashi here, which depicteded their relationship pretty well.
After rewrites we have the current shy and endearing Satoshi.
So essentially:
