I'm taking Japanese in college right now and the pace is absolutely glacial, but some people still can't handle it. We do half a Genki textbook per semester. Genki focuses a lot more on utilizing the grammar points in responses. Instead of having you memorize a big list of vocab and kanji, it pushes you to come up with organic responses using the little vocab and grammar you know. It's much better for speaking than for understanding, I'd say. This is what makes Genki difficult for self-study - it's all about practicing conversation and response, which requires a partner and a native speaker that can answer any questions about nuance. It needs to be supplemented outside of the classroom with vocab and kanji or you're going to feel like it was wasted time.
