Ran's characterization and specifics on how she and shikigami works are all convoluted to say the least. First she was her own character and the fox and shiki were one and the same, same deal with Chen; then they weren't and they are completely separate beings. 20 years of contradicting information, but I can't say that's necessarily a bad thing: Reimu for example is all over the place on her characterization and it is all technically canon, but the arguments around what she really is isn't nearly as hot as what Ran's character is, people just accept that it is this way and pick a version they like best. As for Ran, does she remember her past because Yukari's influence is waning? Or did she always have that sense of self and remember things pre-possession?
Her fanon characterization stemmed from PCB and stuck with most people and that's where she was the most "personable." In SSiB and contemporary works, she's made out to be a pawn that Yukari has to debug and act stupid so Yukari can divulge her plans to the reader. One line stuck out to me that was along the lines of 'you can do complex math but can't add simple numbers together' when talking about the SDM rocket. Regardless of this characterization, Ran is clearly her own character here and runs contradictory to that. Ran does not look like she's struggling to act on her own.
I'm looking forward to the full TL to see what was done and correct my speculation.
