When you run the launcher make sure you check mark the "Update" box.
Again, you will need a email of some form for multiplayer.

You have some simple options in the menu, but the REAL option exist while having a game running. You can start a local game in single player and selecting skirmish. Once the game starts and are in game, you can select options on the top right of your screen (make sure advance view is turned on).

Apart from graphic settings to suite your needs you don't need change anything. I do recommend going into audio tab and and having the "Modern theme" enabled so that the soundtrack doesn't get too repetitive. I will give the sever name and password once i'm ready to host.
