I think it was more likely the 4 hours per day that he was reading.
I also did RTK for roughly 2000 kanji and I don't read nearly as much since I just don't have time. This graph is the result. As you can see I'm going at about half the pace that he was going and my relearn is a bit higher. It would be interesting to see the results of someone who hasn't done RTK at all.
