Depends on the deity. As I understand it, Suwako is a curse goddess, which I suppose means that she takes whatever malevolence the land has and allows humans to live their pitiful little lives but makes no effort to make herself known or be worshipped, meanwhile Kanako is a fertility goddess that brings rains, but needs faith for her survival. Hina is a minor deity that also removes curses, but I am not sure if she seeks out worship or if she exists for the sole purpose of helping humanity.
