It's really bizarre. In post-Gou interviews, he downplayed the school stuff, and often highlighted Satoko's background and Eua's intervention.

But then he has gotten really into defending it post-Sotsu. Not only in that one actual Sotsu stream, but even in unrelated stuff like the Hou+ Cast Party. But if he intended that to really be the core of it all why was he downplaying it initially, after the relevant episodes had already aired?

I feel like he somehow was convinced by the anime staff that it was a good take on his idea and then fully embraced it. See also him referencing Higurashi's "tragicomedy" style in a recent interview, just like the Gou/Sotsu director's reference to the gore as comedy, even though that style didn't really exist before for Higurashi.
