In Dwarf Fortress, pictures literally are a thousand words, or rather, ASCII symbols assuming you're not playing with tiles.

Nevertheless, a look at the crystal in action. The current method used to transform fairies; the generation of a stone that immediately vaporizes afterward in order to transform them (pictured here), has proved both quite unreliable as well as unwieldy; one can potentially transform several fairies at once if they bunch them up next to the crystal when it goes off. Nevertheless, the only alternative is making it produce potions, which are another can of worms altogether.

Getting a specific fairy to use it is a bit tricky. You'll have to set up a manager and manually manage the crystal so that only a specific fairy may use its reactions at one time.

Also, crystals take a really long time to set up. Need to make sure to set up shard stockpiles next to the site you want to erect them, unless you want the process to take literal seasons!
