Actually, it's the opposite.

Rika is ridiculously depressed.
Rika never laughs, not even once.

So whenever she's saying ''nipah'', that's when she's suppose to be laughing or show extreme happiness.
But Rika can't actually do it because she's dead inside.
It's rather depressing.

As for Rena, she's actually pretending to be retarded because she would rather pretend to be retarded than change her surroundings which can cause her happy times to end.
She only becomes serious when she absolutely needs to.

I'm still unclear whether or not Rena loves cute things, because she likely purposefully does that she's a girl and girls like cute things (?), but her mother fucking her and her father caused her to destroy everything related to her mother and hating anything cute.
I really just think she's pretending to hoard all these cute things to seem eccentric and interesting.
And the fact that she can activate her adorable mode to fight off Chie is a bit suspicious.

Honestly, I'm hoping Hou will shed some light on this and make a single canon of the events.
I also suspect that the reason Hanyuu's hated friend dislikes her is because of that drama.

Something along the lines that the 2hu girl was on earth for a long time, Hanyuu and her clan came on Earth to seek refuge and stayed in Hinamizawa.
The 2hu and Hanyuu argued on what to do, Hanyuu exposed herself and tragedy happened. And the two hate each other because of whatever the fuck happened there.
