Wow, I didn't realize so many people liked SA. I always thought the grazing system and Orins fight turned people off from it. Anyway...

>Favorite Touhou game:
SA. Was my first Touhou game and even though it was hard as fuck on normal for me, something kept me coming back to it.

>Least favorite Touhou game:
UFO. Didn't like the UFO system at all, and Ichirin was annoying to learn because of Unzan.

>Favorite Touhou:
Okuu. Mained her in 12.3 because she was fun as fuck to play as even though she was low tier. Her boss fight in SA was incredibly fun and worth learning. And lastly, I like most of her books, and think as a character she has a rare healthy balance of cuteness, sexiness, and awesomeness.

Can't say I actually dislike any one particular Touhou. I guess Ichirin is my least favorite only because I had so much trouble with her in UFO but I don't hate her or anything.

It gives us the freedom to explore a character by making our own interpretetions about herself, her past and her future.

That is definitely true to some extent, but many Touhous we understand far more about since we get to see many of them in multiple games or manga with lots more dialogue than others. Although it still applies even more-so to all SA characters and especially Okuu, since she:

a) Don't get hardly any spotlight in any of the canon works, other than SA and a little bit from Soku
and
b) "She doesn't come to the surface or interact with humans much so her personality is unclear." as mentioned from SoPM
and lastly
c) "Threat level: Unknown / Human friendship level: Unknown" also from SoPM

Some of these same things also apply to most SA characters since they also never appeared in the manga or any games. While this kind of bothered me at first that not much more was revealed about Okuu, it continued to give fans much more freedom to interpret Okuu how they wanted, which is nice.

And it's like you said, it's up to the community to use the freedom of interpretation to turn these characters into something more than only what we see in canon. But more often than not, it ends up being a good thing from my experience, at least with the majority of the characters I pay the most attention to.
