Literally countless derivations at this point, even if you just narrow it down to Alice in Wonderland-esque characters.

It's not common at all among Japanese first names, if that's what you mean. Even including kanji transcriptions1:

As the Wikipedia article states, Alice is one of several common placeholder names in the West for a girl, like say Mary, Jill, etc. For whatever reason, it became a very common name for a generic female foreign character in Japanese culture, particularly in textbooks. One factor could be that "arisu" fits well with Japanese phonology, but that's just conjecture.
That, along with the cultural footprint of Alice in Wonderland, likely accounts for its representation in otaku works.
