most programmers get filtered just like how they get filtered by Japanese for the same reasons.
people take poor learning approaches to programming and skip essentials and fail to choose good projects for their skill level (either too easy no progress, or too hard over frustration and poor habits).
depends on language, goals, and how good you are at computers in general (can you at looking at the internet to solve software problems? do people ask you for help at fixing their computers?)
Also you actually need to find programming fun, which means you are a masochist, because the fun problems are the hard problems, and most programmers are perfectionists, because the smaller the mistake, the more punishing the problem is.
Programming for video games for example is a special kind of masochism because being good at programming is not the only skill required.
