Once Japan was gone, Russia invaded China and took what Japan had essentially given up. Not only did this anger them and help foster strong anti-foreign sentiments, Russia also declined to withdraw their 180,000 man army from Manchu after the Boxer rebellion and ignored Japan's demand for Russia to accept Korea as part of their empire.

Japan attacked overconfident Russia and defeated them on both land and sea. Russia lost both its far east fleet and Baltic fleet (which had sailed around the world into an ambush). It was actually the first war where mass infantry assault became common which helped them win the war, but suffered large casulties. Despite the world watching, nothing was learned and the same costly tactics were used 10 years later in WW1.
