I’m going to highlight this. It strikes the problem bitched about in VNTS ad infinitum.

Worse. The perception is that the translation is being made worse by design. Is it any wonder how we got to this state? Players complain and see the translators strut, guffawing at us for daring to criticise. The battle-lines are drawn and each side is deeply entrenched. We’re in total war. No hill is too small to die on.

Player’s wishes. The players buying these games are passionate. Asking translators to hold the same love for a product is too much to ask, but is it too much to ask for respect? There is scant outreach from translators. They’ll post their reasoning, and then close the gates. No further discussion. Sycophants then rally around and beat their drum to the same tune.

Players are voicing their concerns. These players are the core fanbase for translator’s products, and the engine of their anger are the perceived slights against something they hold dear.

I don’t need to elaborate on this. To err is human. A project can be a maze of interconnected pieces, each with their own reason to fail, and the monetary constraints of this scene are at the forefront. I respect that, and I can extend good-will that mistakes happen. Translators acting like rock-stars, however, destroys the faith we give to your projects.

Be more open to player complaints. Skirmishes are fought over honorifics because these are what people are most familiar with. Do some introspection on how to turn player complaints into player praise.

And in closing, it is dangerous to discard anonymous opinions, because truth is only carried in anonymity. Identity tempers an opinion. The vitriol in these threads reveals the depth of people’s feelings.
