I'd nod politely, shrug, and agree that it's probably for the best.

Later that night, I'd open a small satchel and pack it with tough traveling clothes, my pistols, and belt on my rapier. Saddling a steed from the stables, I'd ride like a madman for the estate of my betrothed. Knocking at the gate, I'd feign great worry and consertation, and tell the manorservants that I must speak with my betrothed immediately. If they gave me any shit I'd happily ask them if they were implying I, a young man of good breeding with a powerful father, was a dishonorable scumbag, or that the maiden's father and their employer would consent to hand her off to some such.

Gaining an audience with my fiancee, I would lay out my plans for flight, and invite her to join me, pointing out that she'd just be sold off like chattel to some other asshole if she stayed here. Whatever her reply, I would get my ass aboard a merchant vessel bound for The Colonies as soon as I was able. There I will put to good use the skills I developed as a layabout loser; the many hours spent in field hunting providing for my larder and the fruitless decadence in the parlor involving that silly game "Small Wars," what with the toy soldiers and all, honing my ability to keep ledgerbooks for wealthy merchants. Once I've saved a tidy-enough sum I will give the majority of it to the renegade young lady to give her a starting stake in the New World.

Then I would strike out on my own, perhaps exploring the wild frontier, or making my way to Spanish Florida, there to join a privateer crew preying upon English shipping.
