There were plenty of other platformer games during the time when mario brothers came out. But that didn't stop mario brothers from selling 40+ million units. A number that's twice as big as GTA - the best selling game on the PS2. No other platformer came close to mario brother's gameplay.

Mario could have been a giant blue hedgehog and it still would have sold millions. Do you really think people cared about characters back in the 8 bit era?
