That is where you're wrong, my dear. This here is USS New Orleans, she was launched in 1896 and commissioned in 1898. Now I can hear you screaming "anon, that is not a CL!11!!1111!" and I've to tell you that USN most respectfully disagrees with that statement. You see in August of 1921 USN designated her CL-22 so I'm afraid to tell you that there was (and still is given that USS Olympia, CL-15, still exists) such thing as pre-WW1 CL. There were also pre-WW1 CAs like USS New York/Saratoga/Rochester (CA-2) that was launched in 1891, commissioned in 1893, decommissioned in 1933, and was scuttled in Subic Bay during the Battle of the Philippines in 1941.
