Not just aesthetics, but filling in the blanks for yourself. The world was full of interesting things before modern science, that's one of the reasons Gensokyo is so cool. Superstition/imagination due to lack of explanation/mysticism of the unknown/not knowing what could be lying in wait where you haven't explored or even seen, these are things that trump the creative exploration of science, but >>19994379 and old-school sci-fi is getting onto something, maybe once science enables these things, maybe that sense of the unknown and mystical can be restored.
